The Trustee Poll allows CURRENT Trustees to indicate their unofficial opinions about questions or issues that could be agenda items, the beginning of agenda items or just something a Trustee would like to 'throw out' to everyone for some idea of how popular the item may be. Only CURRENT OR PAST TRUSTEES can send in an item for this section. The author has the opportunity to give his/her brief reasoning for the item. Anyone who responds can only give their indication of how they feel about the item, without any reasoning. No names will be reflected on results, only the number of people indicating for each of the 5 categories.

Although the Trustee Line is a good place to air one's opinion about any subject, there are many Trustees, both current and past, who don't feel comfortable writing about it. This page allows you to reflect a non-binding indication of how you perceive the item as it is submitted to this page. What happens in the Trustee meeting on actual agendas is independent of this page. This page is not meant to replace attendance at a Trustee meeting.

If you are current or past Trustee, you can email your new Poll item.

Should the link above not work, copy and paste this email address into a blank email: trustee.site.admin@trusteewebsite.com and don't forget to indicate that you wish to submit a new Trustee Poll item.

1 - Unity Step 3 - Change 'desire to stop gambling' to 'desire not to gamble'

Current: The only requirement for Gamblers Anonymous membership is a desire to stop gambling.

Proposed: The only requirement for Gamblers Anonymous membership is a desire not to gamble.

Submitted by David M. - Area 12, New Jersey on 05/20/2012
Reasoning: I know everyone is very protective of the Steps, as well they should be. However, this step is a straight copy from the AA program with a few changes to make it fit for GA. For anyone who is reading this and has not gambled, you need to ask yourself this question - How can you have a desire to stop something that you are not doing? I know if someone were to ask me if I have a desire to stop gambling, my answer would be a definite NO, because I am not gambling. I DO have a desire not to gamble, and that is why I continue to come to meetings.

I have spoken with numerous Trustees on this, both past and present and each one answers this same questions with a lot of qualifiers. It is the qualifiers that we add to other items in the program that create problems of interpretation, when this should be a black and white issue. If you ask an abstinent GA member if they have a desire NOT to gamble, you will get an emphatic YES, without any qualifiers or rationalizations.

The current form suggests membership without any other qualifiers, when it is targeted only to people who are currently gambling. This is fine, but the new version is all-inclusive without the need for an explanation.
